In 1984, Dr. Anastakis
completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) followed by a
MD in 1988, both at University of Toronto. From 1990 to
1995, Dr. Anastakis was a resident in plastic and
reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto,
becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons
(Canada) in August 1995, Fellow of the American College
of Surgeons in October 2001, and a Fellow of the International
College of Surgeons in April 2004.
Dr. Anastakis also has a strong interest in medical
education and, in 1989/90, completed a Master of Health
Professions Education at the University of Illinois at
Chicago. He is currently completing his Masters in
Health Care Management at Harvard.
In 1995 and 1996, Dr. Anastakis completed two clinical
fellowships, obtaining highly specialized training in
peripheral nerve and reconstructive microsurgery, two
areas of clinical interest. From September to December
1995, he was clinical and research Fellow in
microsurgery and surgical education at the Toronto
Hospital. From January to December 1996, he was a Fellow
in hand and peripheral nerve surgery at the Clinique de
Longeraie in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Dr. Anastakis is an
Associate Professor in the Divisions of Plastic and
Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Surgery, University
of Toronto. He is on staff at the Toronto Western
Hospital, University Health Network and a Consultant
with the Hand Program of the Ontario Workplace Safety and
Insurance Board.

Dr. Anastakis has
particular clinical interest in the following types of
surgical procedures:
- Peripheral Nerve Surgery
- Tendon Transfers
- Functional Microsurgery
- Toe to Thumb Transfers
- Free Functioning Muscle Transfers

|
Since 1984, Dr. Anastakis
has published widely including articles in peer reviewed
journals, book chapters and abstracts. He has made
numerous presentations at scientific meetings in Canada,
the United States and Europe. Currently, his clinical
research focuses on secondary reconstruction and
reanimation of the paralyzed upper extremity and
cortical plasticity. He
continues to conduct research in medical education and
has received a number of grants to support this
research.
Dr. Anastakis is actively involved also
as a teacher, lecturer, supervisor and mentor in undergraduate and
graduate surgical education at the University of
Toronto. Dr. Anastakis has won numerous awards for
teaching and research, including the prestigious R.
Samuel McLaughlin Fellowship in 1996.
